I can understand that you would all be upset about the overweight children. It upsets me also and I used to look at parents the way you do. I would see an overweight child and say, "What the **** does their parents feed them?" This all changed when one of my three children became one of those overweight children. She is 6 and weighs more than 100 pounds. Her two sisters are thin as can be. I fought for years for someone to listen to me. Her weight is not from eating too much or lack of exercise or anything like that and NO ONE would believe me for a long time. I fought with doctors, nurses, even the audience and guests on this show. Yes, I was a guest with my daughter and they didn't want to do anything but put the kids on a modified Atkin's diet. When I suggested I think it was due to some kind of medical problem, it fell on deaf ears. Well, it is a few years later, and she has been diagnosed with a medical condition where obesity is a part of it. If you want to blame anyone, blame society. Blame those that won't listen and refuse to educate or listen to parents. The only place I found any help with was a support group on the internet who also went through what my daughter went through. She and many thousands of people are diagnosed with a rare disease called Cushing's Syndrome. Getting diagnosed can take many many years and there are probably many people affected that do not even know because many doctors don't even know about it. I know that all the kids aren't in her situation and some are over fed, but the comments to the children by other children and ADULTS has to stop. My child asks me all the time why her belly looks different than other children's and why people make fun of her. She is no less active than any other child and eats about the same or less than most skinny children. STOP generalizing these children into the same category of overeating. Stop attacking parents of children with obesity. It isn't right to anyone and just leads to more hate and ignorance. When we all have no flaws, than we have the right to judge. Until then, please think before you speak because underneath all of the weight is a person with feelings and you are not the one who has to tell them they are beautiful while they cry on your shoulder because her classmates won't play with her because she is "fat" as they call it.

Stacy, we don't "attack" parents whose kids have a medical condition, or the parents who think they do, but we "attack" those that say: "Whatever, whatever! I feed my baby ANYTHING they want, and y'all can't tell me NUTHIN!"

THAT'S who we attack, and rightfully so, might I add. You see, I'm a nursing major in school, and I know some things about Cushing Syndrome. On Maury, however, you usually see parents who, well, are like the ones I just described: Some STUPID-A*S, ignorant RETARD" who knows NOTHING, and yet THINK they know EVERYTHING. Had I seen your episode, which I don't think I did, b/c I DEFINITELY would have remembered you, then I HONESTLY wouldn't have "shrugged you off" as "just another ignorant, arrogant, and blind parent."

Because I study this in school, it AMAZES me how some parents, including those on Maury (you being one of the exceptions, though), honestly "ACT" (I HOPE it's an act, b/c how a person could not SEE that allowing their kids to eat the "equivalent" of seven meals a day contributes to their obesity, is BEYOND me) like they're "loving" their kids, when, in actuality, they're only sending them to an early grave. In fact, I posted a forum several months ago (I believe it was "Forever the Fool") b/c one of the mothers had me SO outraged, I had to put my frustration out here on the Boards, b/c here, it's not "about" the parents, but the kids.

Anyways, good luck to your daughter, and I hope things work out.

Thank you for your kind words and I am not attacking you. I might seem defensive but it is only because it is the way I have learned to be with her. As I have said before, a simple trip to the ice cream stand for a hot summer treat, is no longer so simple because of the looks and remarks. My guard is always up and I may come across the wrong way because of it. That is why I get so mad when people say bring the fat babies back. I understand the frustrations with the parents who blatently over feed their children, but many of the comments are directed at the children. I do not know what it will take to make you see they are exploited. Yes, parents bring them on the show, but since I was one of those parents and did it not once, but twice, I know all about the exploitation. I thought long and hard about it the first time and did it to try to get some medical help. There is so much behind the scenes that you have no idea about. While they are trying to get you on the show, they act caring and kind, but when the show is over, you go your way and they go theirs. There is no follow up care and they call you one time. When they start taping for the following season, they call to try to do an update. The first time, I left so upset because of a staff members comments. I only went back the second time because they said they wanted to portray the story the way I wanted it done. I went there and they wouldn't let me discuss the medical aspect of the obesity because she wasn't diagnosed yet. They promised they would let me show the difference in size between my girls. I brought my oldest to NY with me and they said there wouldn't be time to bring her on. They only took a still shot of her and I can't even remember if it made it in the show. As far as the caring part of the show...they gave all of these kids a famous fast food chain breakfast (Golden Arches) and pizza for lunch. You had to feed it to them because there was nothing else and you couldn't leave the studio. My daughter didn't like the breakfast and we refused lunch because of the problems. The second time we went, they had cookies and doughnuts and things like that for the kids. They hold up cue cards and tell you if you don't cry, it looks like you don't care about your child. You are coached the entire time. Parents who genuinely care about their children don't go on the show with the intention to exploit them. They are there because they are promised help and are looking for answers and understanding. One of my main reasons for going on the show was to try to stop the hateful things being said to children. My second reason was to try to get help for a test that my insurance company wouldn't pay for. The other thing I forgot to mention is the fact that they tell you the children have to wear sports bras and underwear because clothing can hide the weight and doctors will watch the show and want to help, so they need to see the actual size of the child. It killed me to put her on stage in that, but I was desperate for help. After the second time we were on the show, we got a diagnosis and they once again made their yearly call about an update. Once I said she had a medical problem, they weren't interested in her story and we haven't heard from them since. Her show is on still here and there, but nothing more but an autographed picture of Maury, who by the way, you don't meet until the show starts, and once it is over, he goes his way and you go yours. No interaction at all. No, thank you for coming, kiss my ***, nothing....

Well put, ladyorion. There is a difference between the parents whose children have faulty genes, but love their healthy snacks and don't touch junk food yet end up being four years and 100 lbs and the stupid parents who think their child should be denied nothing, up to and including 10,000 calories a meal.

not just sad, but very sad sad.gif the real answer to this solution is, once again how a kid is raised in a family, seldom these issues have to do with bad genes or genetics etc. ifyou raise your child away from junk food, you will see that your child will grow up in a normal healthy lifestyle and not over weight, but the truth of the matter is, junk food is easy to get, its cheap and fast, so many people go towards that rout

It's really to bad that there is such a lack of compassion in today's society. I agree with Stacy, that it is the children who are normally belittled when they have no control over the situation, whether it is the food they are consuming or a legit medical issue that is the problem at hand. I had a tummy on me as a child and i can still remember how blunt and rude the doctors were (they didn't believe that i wasn't snacking on junk and candy!). I was a 6 yr old child who wasn't even allowed to drink apple juice, due to the sugar content, and the doctors were still shaking their heads at me in disgust. Yet when i got older and hit a growth spurt they immediately told me that i then needed to gain weight and implied there was something wrong with being 100lbs at 5'1, they've never approved of any weight i've hit. I am so sorry that your story has been lumped in with those of the ignorant parents, who are the ones in need of the doctors' wrath. sad.gif

I feel awful for your situation and the solution isn't one that makes anyone any money - so nobody talks about it. Your one child has an insulin imbalance and is eating way too many carbohydrates. Try picking up the book Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution and he explains it very well. I keep my child on the stage 4 part of the diet (the least restrictive) and he is in perfect health, perfect weight, and considerably bright and active where his classmates aren't.

Please, please pick up this book and educate yourself. Never before has anyone in history eaten as many carbohydrates (pasta, breads, grains) and sugar (high fructose corn syrup is the most evil thing on the planet). I beg of you to pick it up before your poor little girl has to suffer any more.

Best of luck,

Tia

I am INFURIATED with the way this situation has been handled.

Maury's "expert" is a typical know-nothing ignorant. Maury should be hiring MEDICAL DOCTORS to evaluate his guests with obesity problems instead of these blow hard MORONS who are wanna be Dr. Phil.

It is PREJUDICED and IGNORANT to assume that these kids are fat just because of their mothers. Did anyone else notice that their FATHERS were nowhere to be seen? It takes TWO to make a baby, and it takes TWO to raise one. Why aren't the people in the audience demanding to make the FATHERS just as accountable as the MOTHER?

There are LEGITIMATE and VERY REAL eating disorders, such as prader willi syndrome, cushing syndrome, and others that CAUSES kids to overeat. But if you see a kid that STARVES on Maury you can bet that the parents would be supported and sympathized with, instead of publicly punished.

These kids need REAL help, and NOT from a talk show host or his paid new age, diploma milled qualified "expert."

Dear Maury, PLEASE< PLEASE< PLEASE encourage these guests to take their children to a GENETIC SPECIALIST to test for Prader Willi Syndrome! and or other genetic disorders. PRADER WILLI syndrome involves obesity and overeating! These children likely have a physical, medical, genetic disorder. Please encourage your guests to take their children to a Pediatric Neuropsychologist for evaluation and treatment planning. Thank you.
