The Girl Next Door (2007) IMDb page

It doesn't look to by cup of tea, as the whole torture genre seems a bit pointless to me. It is based on a novel and a true story apparantly.

Yeah, I've read about this case and the whole thing turned my stomach so badly just reading about it I can't imagine viewing a recreation.

Just awful, awful, stuff.

Yes it's based on the Indianna case of the murdered girl in the basement named Sylvia Likens. She was tortured for a couple years really by a lot of the neighborhood children and the mother who encouraged it and of course also tortured her. She was the mother of some of the kids but not Sylvia's mother, Sylvia was simply left in her care along with her sister. This was around the time of the World's Fair which is where her parents had traveled to when they left her with this woman. It may very well be the most torturous real case I have ever read about and I've read many. I read the actual case study and then there is a book by Kate Millet called The Basement and that book is written from Sylvia's POV as Kate sees it through case study documents. The Basement is heartbreaking, so much so that it is at times unreadable and you have to take breaks in order to get through it but it is so well written. It's really hard to reccommend a book like that as it is really the hardest thing I've ever read. It hits you to the core of your soul and it will leave a scar there.

It's so hard to believe that this happened in the early 60s... I guess we have come to believe that social horrors belong to the current era, and the decades before ours were Leave it to Beaver innocent.

Well here's the reality msfitz! This probably never would have been reported except for the fact of her death! Had she not died eventually and simply been tortured and lived through all of it, we never would have heard about it! Just my opinion.
