Chiller TV Boards > Movies > Horror Movies (general)

I'm a big H.P. Lovecraft fan and would love too see flicks based on his stories or themes to air on Chiller. Have you folks seen any of these flicks?

Bride of Re-animator
The Crimson Cult
Dagon (very good flick that stayed very true to Lovecraft's style)
The Curse
The Dunwich Horror (a most excellent flick with Dean Stockwell)
The Haunted Palace (with my man Vince)
Necronomicon (weak...but pays homage to the cult master)
Re-animator (no comment...I watch because I love)
The Unnamable II: The Statement of Randolph Carter (The story that the movie is based on is my favorite Lovecraft story)
In the Mouth of Madness (not based on a Lovecraft story...but definitely based on the mythos)

Let me know what you folks think about one or all of these flicks.

Beside for the obvious Re-animator movies, I thought Dagon was great. Gordon is a good director and should be doing more work. Dagon's monsters were great and had an evil mermaid type feel to them. I like the idea of being trapped in an isolated fishing village, it's a nice, creepy setting.

I'm glad you think so. The setting was creepy. Its just how I would have pictured Innsmouth.

Lovecraft was yet another artist tortured by his brilliance. He was from New England and really did a great job at creating such a dark ambience of certain towns. Some say that his real life encounters inspired a lot of what he wrote.

Dagon was very well done. I was surprised. I'm not sure why, but I didn't expect it to be that good.

I love Re-Animator and Bride of Re-Animator. Cult classics, the both of them.

Dunwich and Palace are just straight-up classics. Required viewing for any horror buff.

What about From Beyond?? Wasn't that a Lovecraft flick too? I loved that movie, great concept....

I actually prefer Lovecraft movies to the written stories. I think his ideas were marvelous but his style of writing is ponderous, at best.

I find it easier to relate to the films but that's just my opinion.

The first season of Showtime's Masters of Horror made Dreams in the Witch House. It was updated to be contemporary but it didn't lose any of the ambiance. Stuart Gordon directed.

I'll have to rent Dagon since y'all seem to like it.

The fella that played the lead in Dagon also played the lead in Dreams in the Witch House. Unfortunately, I don't share your thoughts on Dreams. I think that the story was good but the Masters of Horror let me down.

I see your point.

I never really got into lovecraft. I was more of a Poe person myself.

I am a huge Lovecraft fan, but alas I haven't seen many of the movies. Only Dagon, In the Mouth of Madness and Call of Cthulhu. I am trying to get my hands on the others, but it's proving harder than I thought.

Hi Josh,

Oh, I agree about the Masters of Horror. There were sporadic good episodes in season 1 (like Cigarette Burns, Jenifer and Haekel's Tale), but season 2 sucked out loud! With such a collection of directors being able to work (almost) uncensored on Showtime I expected more, too.

I liked In the Mouth...as well. Event Horizon ia actually one of my favorite flicks but I don't think of it as Lovecraftian. Its more Clive Barker to me. Anyway, I like your taste in movies and writers biggrin.gif

I have to agree, Lovecraft tends to go a bit too much off on a tangent to the point I'm not sure what he's trying to describe.

Some of my favorite films were either screen versions of H.P.'s work or elements from them.

I haven't seen any of these films as yet, Josh, but when an open chance to do so presents itself to me, I'll not only watch each and every one of them, I will enjoy them all due to the subtle sneaking up on my imagination which Lovecraft's work, whether it is filmed in addition to being read or not, does with its style of horror. I DID see Pickman's Model and Cool Air as segs of Night Gallery, although I've yet to see the full feature-length version of Cool Air and, hopefully, I will get the chance to see that one, and I hope that they make feature-length adaptations of The Alchemist, The Evil Clergyman, Pickman's Model, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, The Silver Key, Through the Gates of the Silver Key, The Music of Erich Zann, Beyond the Wall of Sleep, At the Mountains of Madness, which moves elements of an earlier short story which Edgar Allan Poe had written to either the North Pole or South Pole, where a scientific exploratory mission is being conducted, and meets up with something horrible, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Shadow out of Time, and The Colour out of Space, as I find Howard Phillips Lovecraft's written work very arctic when it comes to subtle terrors. I mean, Lovecraft was the 20th-century literary heir to the terrifying style of short fiction which Edgar Allan Poe had penned earlier in the 19th century before HPL wrote his equally hackle-raising work. It's just a thought that I wished to express. Thanks for your indulgence. MartinKandell August 29, 2008

Anyone have opinions on the silent film The Call of Cthulhu? Or any of the low budget HP Lovecraft Collection from Lurker Films? My favorite was Volume 3 Out of Mind. Do these ever get shown on chiller?

I think all that you've listed here are excellent selections, hoss. I would definitely like to see if Chiller would air these and other film adaptations of HPL's work. I'm sort of hoping, though, that The Call of Cthulhu gets an update in color with sound (you know, voices and a musical score, amongst other sounds), great acting, effects, sets, photography, direction and production. I'll lay some lines from the Great Old Ones in this and other HPL tales featuring them--"In his house at Rel'yeh, great Cthulhu lies dreaming." Thanks for your indulgence. The King In Yellow
couple years ago i rented all 3 of the re-animator movies on netflix and watched them all back to back in one sitting with a friend of mine. afterwords we had an awesome discussion about how the movies while not completely faithful to the original short story are still good..
