Let's put down some movies that you know of that are underrated, and not many people have heard of or seen. If you can, write a very short prologue to it, post the movie case or poster, and if you can supply a link where it is either available for purchase or further analysis. I shall g first.

Night of the Living Dead Remake(1990)

Not exactly an underground film, but what really surprises me, is how few people know about this, and even fewer people have watched this. It is a classic. With a different ending that is amazing. It was redone with Romero as the executive producer, and Tom Savini as the executive producer. The gore and effects of this film are superb in comparison to the original black and white(I didn't say it was better), and the characters are much more easy to interact with. Perhaps the most surprising twist in the movie is Barbara in this one, as oppose to the 1968 version. And if you are wonderig, yes Cooper still is a bitch. If you have yet to see this movie, I highly recommend it. The Night of the Living Dead remake can easily hold its own with the Dead Series classics.

Night of the Living Dead

Mephistopheles
One of my favourite films that was thrown into the shadow of rocky horror and forgotten. When people do watch it they are usually fat nasty girls who are obsessed with Phantom of the opera and get pissed because it is not even an Opera remake, but really a Faust reinvisioning. With a great script, great acting, fantastic humor, majestic sets and a marvelous score by Paul Williams I nominate De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise for the Underrated Film Showcase and highly reccomend it to anyone who has not seen it!
goremageddon
I've actually heard of that. Sounds cool
Mephistopheles
It is a really really good one and one of the few musicals I LOVE, most of the music is rock music so its not one of those bursting into song in the feild type things.
goremageddon
Is there anywhere online that has it on sale.
Mephistopheles
Amazon has it for like 10 bucks.

I've talked about this movie a lot, and will continue to do so because, damn it, I loved it.

Synopsis:
Six friends on a road trip stop for the night at a Bed and Breakfast in the sleepy town of Lovelock. After a night that leaves both the Inn's owner and chef dead, the gang finds themselves under suspicion by the local Sheriff. But that's only the beginning as nearly all of the town's quirky residents become possessed by an evil spirit and pin down the friends inside the B&B. In the vein of Evil Dead II and Dawn of the Dead. Written by Anonymous

And my husband LOVES that Phantom of the Opera, Meph. He goes nutty when ever it comes on TV.
Mephistopheles
>_< ITS NOT THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA! Thats the big misconseption about it! Everyone makes that mistake and that is why the nasty opera fangirls give it horrible reviews because it is based on the classic Faustian tale and not that of Phantom of the Opera.

BTW I started downloading the movie as soon as you posted it. tongue.gif It should be done soon.

Mephistopheles

goremageddon
Well, enjoy. I liked it. It's just one of those fun movies, you know?
Mephistopheles
I love the fun ones! No spoilers!
goremageddon
I wouldn't want to ruin the movie for you. tongue.gif
Mephistopheles
Thanks, the download has slowed down because the people who are letting me download it keep leaving, they are mostly on during the day and it is a direct dvd rip which means it is about 4 gigs of space, it is going to take a littlte while to downlaod, maybe a few nights.
goremageddon
Well, when you get it, it's pretty cool. I need to think of another underrated movie to put on here. My mind is shooting blanks at the moment.
Mephistopheles
Well congrats gore your section just got a red folder!
goremageddon
hahaha. That's not really much of an accomplishment on this forum. Everyone has something to talk about here, so most folders do go red.
Mephistopheles
Well atleast it attracts a bit more attention now!
goremageddon
True
Mephistopheles
I have alot of svakmajer filims, they are very underated.
goremageddon
Well, put some of them on here.
Mephistopheles
Jan Svankmajer's Alice

This is probably my favourite surrealistic film and one of my firsts! I saw it as a child and was twisted forever, I fell in love with the ceamless stop action artwork and style that Svankmajer uses! Everyone else hated it, even to this day due to the slow pace a repedative almost annoying actions. As I grew older I realized some of the terrifying symbolism that still haunts me to this day, if you have not seen it I highly reccomend it!

headcheese
Alice is defintely an underrated gem, imo! One of the most surreal, but well done, not esoteric where you can't follow along, I love that film.

Another highly underrated movie, I think, is Brian DePalma's Sisters - it features one of Bernard Herrman's last scores and it was the start of DePalma's fairly successful Hitchcockian phase even though it was a box office flop and the critics hated it!
Mephistopheles
I have not seen that one in forever! I have to add it to my queue!

I always thought that The Exorcist 3 was highly underrated by critics and the general public. Sure, some of us horror fans love it, but it didn't get that great of reviews and most people haven't seen it, whereas they at least have seen clips of the first movie. I think the third is almost as good. George C. Scott and Brad Dourif were amazing in it. The visuals were dream-like and disturbing, and the story fits nicely with the first movie (of course, because this is the true sequel and Blatty directed this one). This is one of my favorite horror movies from the 90s.

This movie is definitely befitting of this category, I think part of the reason people were so reluctant to even give this movie a try was because The Exorcist 2 is so very terrible with no redeeming factors, as far as I could see. This is one of my very favorite horror movies of all time. George C. Scott one of the very finest actors, makes this movie believable.
headcheese
btw - that scene where the old lady is crawling across the ceiling really fast like a bug, gets me everytime! My mind flipped a chip the first time I saw that scene! Scared the shit out of me!
astralpictures
That's a good scene. I also like the shots of the fall down the stairs. The opening dream sequence was great.

And the classic scare is the hospital one! When he pops out in the white sheet with those blades after the nurse!
headcheese
I lost my mind on that scene as well, the speed of the execution on that was what really worked! It's just scary! The murders are scary and well thought out!
astralpictures
gore, that movie in the image game was guessed by headcheese and is The Dead Next Door. You told me to list it here, so here it is!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094962/

I think it's a little underrated. It's not a good movie by any means, and it is very low budget, basically no budget. It was shot on super8 film, which everyone knows I'm a huge fan of. The gore is pretty good for amateur kids working on their own. And most of the characters are named after famous horror creators! Sam Raimi contributed some money to the movie and Bruce Campbell helped with VO work, and the main character's name is Raimi. The movie gets bashed a lot, but if you like low budget zombies and gore, then you might like this. Unless you've seen it already and just didn't get the image, which happens to me a lot. And hell, it's on dvd for under $10.

It is pretty much impossible to come up with a list of under rated horror movies on a horror board, as there tends to be at least a few people that know of or love very obscure horror films. I thought the ones listed so far all fit very nicely into the under rated horror movie list, and I have seen all of them, with the exception of The Dead Next Door, which I will have to check out.
Momma's Boy
Long Before From Dusk Till Dawn There Was.....

A bar where the more seedy crowd wind up as Vampire Food! Sure this is much more like Porky's Meets Dracula compared to the Tarantino/Rodriguez led From Dusk, it was still rather an entertaining film.

Basically the setup is like this, couple of guys go out on the town, hearing about a cool bar where the girls are 'loose'. Unfortunately the only thing loose is the guy's collars as the Vamps go down for a nibble. Pretty cool cameo by Billy Drago in the film.
astralpictures
A vampire Porky's sounds like a good movie to me! wink.gif

Oh, and if you watch The Dead Next Door, don't expect a genius movie or anything. I just think that for it's insanely low budget, the age of the filmmakers, and the fact that it was shot on super 8 and has some impressive amateur gore makes it underrated.
micki_dallion
I haven't seen it in ages, but I would consider The Willies to be a bit underrated. It was kind of cheesy, but it had its good moments.

That is the great thing about it. With only a couple people knowing of certain movies, they can share them with everyone else. I am always up for new scary movies, just as I am sure everyone else is. If someone knows of hidden gems, please do share them.
Mephistopheles
I have not seen vamp in forever! I am watching the Buffy movie which was shunned by society and almost completely forgotten when the show came along.
ShaunS
I consider myself a fairly eduacted horror fan. I may not have seen everything out there, but I generally know about most. That being said, I don't know squat about Vamp, and plan on checking it out soon. Have you guys seen Innocent Blood? It is another vampire movie with a female lead.
xombie
and of course day of the dead i think was really underrated to say the least

A friend of mine got to see the Buffy Movie as a sneak peak. He used to have the poster hanging from the ceiling above his bed.

I thought it was a cheesey idea at the time, especially due to the fact of Dylan from 90210 being cast in it. Little would I have known, years after having watched it, I would have the Sword of Angelus, The Slayer Scythe, and Buffy and Angel Embracing, hanging on the walls of my room. blink.gif

Innocent Blood was GREAT. Anne Paurilaud, mostly known from her starring role in the original film La Femme Nikita, was so HAWT!

I just love the scene where the cop starts arguing with her about the mobster being a vampire and she gets that demony voice crying saying 'I screwed up, okay!' tongue.gif

Nothing like a slinky Vampire Vs. The Mob movie. laugh.gif
