My friends and I were talking the other night, and we wondered why no one had really tried to make a good western horror movie. I've seen some; "From Dusk till Dawn 3" and a very bad one called "After Sundown", which started in the old west but then jumped to present day. But not that many spring to mind. It seems like this could be a great type of movie for horror fans. We could have cowboys tracking down werewolves and maybe even pioneer families fighting off vampires or zombies. This stuff could be wild! Let me know if you guys have seen any other western horrors or if you think this could be a new sub-genre for hardcore horror fans.

I was hoping others would think it was as promising as I did.

My friend and I tossed around a few ideas for a Western-Horror script in the past, but nothing came of it. I just read something a few months ago on this sub-genre. I'll try to find it again.

The only thing I can think of is Dead Birds, although it's not exactly a Western. The beginning bank robbery is, the time period is, and the characters are, but the movie is definitely about the horror.

I have seen that one. It wasn't too bad. I do like stuff that takes place in the past, it seems a bit more primitive. I guess it stems from the fact that people back then wouldn't be as up to date as the people in present day horror movies are. They would be more apt to accept the horror and deal with it in a more traditional sense, not question it or even dismiss it like someone from today's time period. Stuff like Ginger Snaps: The Begining or Ravenous are fun to watch to see how the protagonists will react to their situations.

I think properly done a good movie could come of it. Especially the idea you had of werewolves in the old west. I have thought about that one myself for sometime, after I saw the howling series and the werewolves in the outback.

Good Day,,,

There is Undead or Alive, the western/zombedy! It's certainly funny enough for a view. Chris Katan is in this.

Chris Katan in a western zombie, hmmm I may just have to pick that one up. Katan is an idiot.

Lansdale has a great bounty hunter and zombie story called 'On the Far side of the cadillac desert with dead Folks' which is something of a western story. That would make for a very cool film!

well i know of an older one called "westworld" anyone remember this one? it scared me when i was a kid lol..but was made back in the early 70s.......it has yul brynner in it....its about a resort you can go to and its like 3 different pretend worlds, westworld, midievel world and hmmm i cant remember the other one, maybe greekworld or something like that, anyway, you choose your destination of which one you want to go too, but all the ppl there are robots (except the guests ofcourse) and the robots look exactly human except for the hands have a minor defect and thats the only way you can tell if they are human or robots.....needless to say things start going awray especially with yul brynners cowboy character in westworld....dont want to give to much info out...but if you havent seen this one, its probably the "best" western horror in my humble opinion....

I recognized it. That's "Curse of the Undead" aka "Mark of the West." Everytime this topic comes up, that's the first film I think of. With . . .

Eric Fleming as the Preacher/Hero

Kathleen Crowley as the Heroine.

John Hoyt as the Doctor.

Edward Binns as the Sheriff

Bruce Gordon as the Villain.

And Michael Pate as the Man in the Coffin/Vampire.

I also see, that no one has mentioned "Near Dark." Somewhat of a more contemporary vampire western, and one I've never seen, but one I've heard is quite good.

It has to be over 30 yrs since i have seen this movie. I would love if chiller could get their hands on this cowboy western Vampire movie, "Curse Of The Undead".

Also "Near Dark" another great movie. The bar scene to me is still my favorite part of the movie.

Also a new one out now J.T. Petty's The Burrowers, I haven't seen it yet but I hear it's pretty good and I've had it on my netflix queue with a long wait for a while. Also Dead Birds (2005) is a good western/horror with Henry Thomas and Isaiah Washington. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Westworld is great and netflix definitely has that one in stock if you get netflix. 1973 with Yul, it's a classic.
