I will place Veronica Mars up there. While maybe not technically the best PI, the show had some great story telling and storylines out there. Not your typical cookie cutter PI scripts that is for sure. Maybe a little young, but Stephen King, Joss Whedon and Kevin Smith all loved it.

Speaking of which, when will Sleuth pick up Veronica Mars for syndication. It is right up their alley.
