TEN TIPS FOR KEEPING GREEN

Life in the Fast Lane
Fast food restaurants are notorious for wasteful packaging. Not to mention all those calories. Oy! You can do better.

Go Organic
So, no more cheeseburgers and fries. What to do for dinner? We say go organic. Organic farms don’t use chemicals that are harmful to the environment. Many grocery stores now have an organic section.

BYOB
Yep, bringing your own bag when grocery shopping helps cut down on excess paper and plastic waste. Some markets even reward customers for BYOB-ing in the form of giveaways.

A Bright Idea
If you replace standard bulbs with a compact fluorescents, you should see savings in your electric bill. Plus, compact fluorescents last much, much longer.

Sponging Off a Relative
Whenever possible, use a sponge or dishrag instead of paper towels. The trees will thank you.

Be a Star
Appliances featuring the Energy Star logo are environmentally friendly. They cost a little more, but in the long run they make up for the initial investment and then some. Check with your electric company for rebates when you buy Energy Star.

Greener Cleaners
There’s a host of household cleaning products out there that are kinder to the environment and, um, kinder to you. Check the labels next time you shop.

Slower is Smarter
Even those of us who’ve yet to go hybrid can help cut down on gas consumption. Driving at the speed limit and accelerating more slowly when the light turns green will do the trick.

Oil Can What?
It may seem obvious, but when it comes time to change your car’s oil or transmission fluid, mmmmmmm, do-it-yourselfers definitely want to collect and recycle.

Tired Tires
Keeping your tires properly inflated will help improve your gas mileage. And it’s safer. Oh, and your tires will last longer, too.

I must disagree with this one. CFL's are actually classified as hazzardous. They contain enough mercury to warrant special handling if broken and when disposing. Just one of these bulbs contains enough mercury vapor that if broken by a child, the exposure from it can exceed EPA standards for save exposure. As a busy ND who spends LOTS of time detoxing children loaded with heavy metals causing various sensory problems from ADHD to Autism, the idea of more mercury from CFL light bulbs does not make me happy!
ALSO: these bulbs are ONLY made in China!
Watch this clip. It's enlightening (pun intended)http://youtube.com/watch?v=e-LOtKIIKcg

Just use a regular bulb and TURN it off when you aren't in the room. Or use timers to ensure the lights don't stay on. The same goes for computers, vcr's, dvr's, etc. Turn them off and unplug them when not in use.
